One of the main bases of Christianity lies in the affirmation that Jesus Christ is God. However, some self-claimed Christian (and other non-Christian) religions deny this claim. These religions or schools of thought are based on intuition, imagination, philosophy, false religion and bad human interpretation that presents a false Christ.

 

An example of this is Jehovah's Witnesses. To them Jesus is not God, but He is a creation of God and therefore is not eternal.

 

With the help of the Bible, we will clarify any questions you may have about this and demonstrate, without doubt, that the Bible reveals that Jesus Christ is God. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the deity of Jesus Christ is revealed.

 

The deity of Jesus Christ embodied in the Bible

 

We will name a few basic points of the deity of Jesus Christ embodied in the Bible. For a deeper study on this particular issue, we recommend that you read topic 11 "The deity of Jesus Christ" found in "Are you a long time Christian."

 

To begin we will quote the first chapter of John where it is stated that the Word (Logos in original Greek), was with God and was God:

 

John 1:1-2

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 

2 He was in the beginning with God.

 

Later in verse 14 we are told that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us:

 

John 1:14

14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

 

Therefore, the first chapter of John reveals to us that the Word is Jesus Christ, that Jesus Christ is God and that the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us. With such relevatory verses, there should be no doubt about the deity of Jesus Christ and the study should end here. However, we want to expose other verses that also demonstrate the divinity of Jesus Christ to make it clear that this is something very present and very thoroughly discussed in the Bible.

 

The Name of Jesus Christ

 

The name Jesus means Immanuel, which means God with us.

 

Matthew 1:23

23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”

 

Jesus Christ is eternal, He is not a creation

 

John 1 says that in the beginning, the Word (Logos) was with God and was God. This means that Jesus Christ existed and coexisted eternally with God. Jesus Christ was not part of God's creation (beginning Genesis 1:1) because He already coexisted with God before the beginning (Colossians 1:15-19, John 17:5). This is very important because if you are not part of the beginning, then you are above it and therefore all that exist, thus including space and time. Hence, Jesus Christ is eternal and not created (see Revelation 1:17-18 where Jesus Christ is identified as the first and the last).

 

This is one of the reasons why Jesus took the title that God uses to describe Himself as Lord. When Moses asked God for his name to inform the people, God said, I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:14). Jesus responded similarly to the Jews in John 8:58:

 

John 8:58

58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

 

This is a clear demonstration that both Jesus Christ and God are eternal. Both use the same verbal title demonstrating continuity and eternity. Therefore Jesus spoke in this term because there was never a time that He never existed, because He is eternal. (Other verses: John 8:24, Mark 6:50, Mark 14:62 John 13:19, John 17:5, John 1:1-2)

 

It is also important to see the distinction between the persons of Jesus Christ and God in verse 2  "He was in the beginning with God.” This is important because it indicates that Jesus Christ is not only God and eternal, but also a different person than God. This is where we must understand the Trinity, there is only one God and yet three distinct persons in Him.

 

Jesus affirms his deity

 

Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, claim that Jesus is not God because He appoints the Father and his authority as superior to Him (John 14:28). This however shows that there are different types of positions and functions in the Trinity .

 

It is true that Jesus did nothing unless the Father permitted it, but it is also true that God the Father did not create anything unless it was through Jesus Christ (John 1:3), and at the same time, no road leads to the Father except through Jesus Christ (John 14:6). This does not mean that God the Father is less than Jesus Christ or the other way around. It simply helps us understand that the three persons of the Trinity have different positions and are subordinate to each other.

 

IMPORTANT: Note that at times we must distinguish when Jesus speaks in human quality, therefore having been stripped of his deity (Philippians 2:5-11). Please read topic 12 called "If Jesus Christ is God, how is it possible that He doesn’t know the date of the second coming"  found in the section "Are you a long time Christian". There, important and revealing qualities about this important aspect are addressed.

 

Here we see some examples where Jesus affirms his deity:

 

John 10:30

30 I and the Father are one.”

 

Matthew 12:8

8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

 

John 14:9-10

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.

 

Note: The declaration made by Jesus Christ in the above verse (John 14:9-10), has a completely unusual quality that has never been said by anyone else. While the second part of the verse "The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works" could be said by a servant of God, we have to see how the first part of the verse "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?" is an unusual statement that a no person not of divine character would say. It is Biblical for us to be able to say that God is in us, but we can never say that we are in God. That can only be done by Jesus Christ (by His divine nature) and this reinforces, once again, the Trinitarian nature of God.

 

John 17:21

21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

 

John 14:11

11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.

 

John 10:38

38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

 

IMPORTANT: It is amazing how some people do not want to see that Jesus Christ clearly stated himself as God. In fact the Bible tells us that the Jews wanted to kill Jesus because he put himself at the same height as God.

 

John 10:30-33

30 I and the Father are one.”

31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

 

John 5:18

18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

 

A note on the meaning of "Son of God".

 

It is important to see that when Jesus Christ was declared as the son of God or that God was his Father, this made ​​him be in a divine position and put him at the same height as God. As seen above, this is one of the reasons why the Jews wanted to kill him. This very fact happened when Jesus stood before the council (Matthew 26:59-66, Mark 14:55-64, Luke 22:66-71) when he acknowledged that He was the Son of God (Mark 14:62) , making himself equal to God. This was regarded as blasphemy by the priests.

 

Well, that divine concept of God is not only mentioned by Jesus, but declared by his disciples, his servants and others throughout the New Testament (Matthew 16:16, 1 John 5:20, Galatians 4:4, Mark 15: 39, John 1:8 etc ...). More importantly, this divine title is declared by the fallen angels who were with him before:

 

Mark 5:7

7 and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”

 

Luke 8:28

28 Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.”

 

Jesus himself reiterates this divine distinction when he asks the Pharisees who the Messiah is the son of (Matthew 22:41-46, Mark 12:35-37 and Luke 20: 41-44). He himself said that it could not be the son of David and therefore any human son of human ancestry. Jesus said that the Messiah (Himself) was the same son of God and so declared David, saying: The Lord said to my Lord.

 

Does this mean that in being the son of God, Jesus Christ is inferior to God? No, to be the Son of God, as the only begotten that the Bible declares, is the same as saying that he has the same nature as God. This is a divine nature and therefore eternal. This mystery is something that can only be explained by the aforementioned Trinity.

 

Note: When we say that we are children of God, we are not putting ourselves in the same position as Jesus. The Bible states in many places that we are children of God (Matthew 5:45, Matthew 6:1, Matthew 6:4, Matthew 23:9, Galatians 3:26, Galatians 4:5-7). We are like adopted children, but Jesus Christ is different because he is mentioned as the only begotten and this is part of his deity:

 

John 1:18

18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

 

1 John 4:9

9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

 

John 3:16

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

 

Here is the divine diversification of the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

 

We also see a very revealing verse in Luke 10:22 (also Matthew 11:25-27). No one knows the Son except the Father and no one knows the Father except the Son. What does this mean? Well, the depths of God, his whole being, his knowledge and thoughts can only be known between them. How can it be that the only one who knows the Father God is Jesus Christ (the Son) and the only one who can know the Son is the Father?. That can only be possible if these are two people in the same deity. In this we can clearly see two persons of the Trinity represented in this statement of Jesus.

 

Luke 10:22

22 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

 

Jesus declares that the use of the donkey is necessary for the Lord (Himself):

 

Luke 19:31

31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

 

The servants of Jesus assert His deity

 

If we have previously seen how Jesus Christ himself affirmed his deity, here are some examples where the disciples also affirm his deity:

 

1 Timothy 3:16

16 By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness:

He who was revealed in the flesh,
Was vindicated in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Proclaimed among the nations,
Believed on in the world,
Taken up in glory.

 

Romans 9:5

5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessedforever. Amen.

 

Philippians 2:5-11

5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

 

Hebrews 1:1-4

1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things,through whom also He made theworld. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

 

Hebrews 1:8

8 But of the Son He says,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom.

 

2 Peter 1:1

1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant andapostle of Jesus Christ,To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

 

James 1:1

1 James, a bond-servant of God andof the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings.

 

Note: Remember that Jesus says in Matthew 6:24 that you cannot serve two masters ... When James was giving this introduction, he was saying that Jesus Christ is God.

 

Titus 2:13

13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

 

Colossians 2:9

9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

 

1 John 5:20

20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may knowHim who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.This is the true God and eternal life.

 

2 Corinthians 4:4

4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

 

John 1 :29-34

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man whohas a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ 31 I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.” 32 John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him,this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

 

The author of Hebrews has no doubt that Jesus Christ is God and therefore named the reproaches of Christ that Moses had to go through (the author could have said the reproaches of God, but instead he said Jesus because he is God):

 

Hebrews 11 :23-26

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

 

Isaiah claims to have seen the Lord (Isaiah 6:1) and the Lord spoke to him (Isaiah 6:8):

 

Isaiah 6:1

6 In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.

 

Isaiah 6:8

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

 

Later, John tells us that who Isaiah saw was Jesus Christ:

 

John 12 :36-41

36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may becomesons of Light.”

These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.37 But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him. 38 This wasto fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 “He has blinded their eyes and He hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and be converted and I heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him.

 

The same happens in the Book of Nehemiah, which states that the Lord created the heavens and the earth:

 

Nehemiah 9:6

6 “You alone are the Lord.
You have made the heavens,
The heaven of heavens with all their host,
The earth and all that is on it,
The seas and all that is in them.
You give life to all of them
And the heavenly host bows down before You.

 

Later Paul gives the same deed as a work of Jesus, making us understand that there is no difference between Jesus and God:

 

Colossians 1:14-19

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For it was the Father’sgood pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

 

Note: The New Testament associates Jesus Christ as Lord (Jesus Christ) more than 80 times.

 

God Himself affirms this

 

This same God the father says that Jesus is God through the prophet Isaiah:

 

Isaiah 9:6

6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

 

Isaiah 7:14

14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

 

* Later in Matthew 1:23 we are given the explanation of the meaning of Emanuel as God with us:

 

Jesus issued the decree that God told him, affirming that Jesus is his son and therefore shared his divine nature:

 

Psalms 2:7

7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.

 

Matthew 3:17

17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

 

Note: In Acts 23:11 we see the following: "But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also." Here we are told how the Lord (Divine) presents himself to Paul and tells him that he has testified of me in Jerusalem. When it refers to "me" it refers to the person of Jesus Christ (Acts 22:6-8).

The Holy Spirit (the third person of the Trinity) also declares this:

 

Mark 12:36

36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet.”’

 

The angels assert His deity

 

We have seen above that the title Son of God (as the only begotten John 1:18, 1 John 4:9, John 3:16, etc ...) is a title that implies deity and exalts the Son to an equal status with the Father, as both have divine nature. In Luke chapter 1:35 we see the angel Gabriel appears to Mary and testifies that Jesus Christ is the Son of God:

 

Luke 1:35

35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be calledthe Son of God.

 

We have also shown above how the fallen angels recognized the deity of Jesus to call him Son of God (Mark 5:7, Luke 8:28).

 

Attributes of Jesus that only belong to God

 

This section displays some attributes that the Bible shows us about Jesus Christ, which only God can have:

 

 (SPECIAL NOTE: It is important to note that with just one of the following points that we will name, it is enough to prove the deity of Jesus Christ, please read topic 11 "Deity of Christ" in "Are you a long time Christian", there we expose a total of 38 points)

 

1.    Omnipresence: Matthew 18:20 For where two or three have gathered in My name, I am there in    their midst. (See also: John 1:48 and Matthew 28:20 among others).

 

2.    Omnipotence: The miracles that Jesus did, the resurrections of dead etc. demonstrate that He was all powerful.

 

3.    Omniscience: John 16:30  Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God.”(See also: John 2:24-25, John 6:64 and John 21:17, Luke 7:36-50, Luke 9:47, Luke 11:17 ... etc.).

 

Jesus could say this and do all that he did because Jesus Christ is God.

 

In this study we have proven without a doubt that Jesus Christ is God. All points and reasonings have been based on the Bible. Now there is no room for doubt that the deity of Jesus Christ is a reality.

 

Conclusion

 

After all of the above, there is no longer any doubt that the deity of Jesus Christ is a reality. It is fully present in the Bible and it is not, in any way, a human invention or an invention of any particular church. We therefore should declare this truth and defend the deity of Jesus Christ that the Bible tells us.
