10. what happens after death?

Note: It is recommended that you read topic 11 and 12 after reading this one.

The question of what happens after death has been asked hundreds of times and many opinions have been formed, depending on the person and their beliefs.

Some people think that after death there is nothing; they believe that our bodies and existence simply end. For others, the thought that we just end seems like something inconceivable. It is impossible for them to understand that their soul one day disappears, that their “self” could die. They believe there is something more; that our soul is immortal and that we rise and are incarnated into other people, or simply go to a peaceful place.

Yet the Bible, the only book that God provided us so that we can know Him and His will, shows us the reality of the situation. After death, there are two places we can go for eternity: Heaven or Hell.  Where we go depends on our relationship and obedience to God.

Heaven

According to the Bible heaven is a place reserved just for those who are saved and have done the will of God. Not all who say they believe in God have a place reserved there, but only those who do the will of God and have faith in Jesus Christ. The access to heaven is completely free. Jesus Christ paid the price for us to get there.  We do not have to pay anything or have the right connections to go to Heaven.  To enter Heaven there is no distinction of race, social class or any prejudices whatsoever.

The entrance to heaven is personal and does not depend on third parties. Nor does it depend on the money we have in our checking account. In order to be saved, we need to repent of our sins, we need to ask God for forgiveness,  and have faith in Jesus Christ. We therefore need to believe by faith and obey God’s commandments.

Hell

According to the Bible, hell is a place of constant suffering, made for the devil. It is also a place prepared for those who are disobedient to God’s word (a continuous practice of Sin with no repentance), and all those who reject the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Hell can be defined as the opposite of heaven. Eternal peace, smiling, glory, eternal satisfaction and happiness will be turned into suffering, sorrow, agony, pain, hunger, thirst and despair for eternity.

Conclusion

Both places will be the fate of all without exception (regardless of our religion or our beliefs). There is no escape, after our life on earth is finished, we will go to one place or another and there will be no backtracking. We will not be able to repent of our sins and have faith in Jesus Christ once we die. Hence, the importance of seeking God now, repenting of our sins and giving our lives to Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and salvation of our souls.

Remember, Christianity differs from all other religions, by the fact that salvation is not earned by the works that we have done in this world.  Our reward after death will not be based on the work we have done (or not done). Salvation will only come by repentance of our sins, asking for forgiveness from God and by faith in Jesus Christ. Once these three variants are met, a Christian would act accordingly  to God’s Word and his/her works will reflect the will of God on their lifes.
